Core IMPACTS

Discover the Core IMPACTS Advantage

The University System of Georgia's (USG) Core IMPACTS is a general education curriculum, offering a well-rounded, comprehensive set of courses covering subjects from math and science to arts and writing. These courses are designed to provide students with a strong foundation for life, learning, and career success while helping build momentum to fulfill academic, personal, and professional aspirations.

Core IMPACTS is structured across seven areas: Institutional Priority; Mathematics and Quantitative Skills; Political Science and U.S. History; Arts, Humanities and Ethics; Communicating in Writing; Technology, Mathematics and Sciences; Social Sciences.

More than just a general education checklist, these courses introduce students to different ways of understanding the world and address the big questions that shape their futures. Students will take 42 credit hours (or about 13-14 courses, depending on their institution) in Core IMPACTS, with flexibility in course choices based on interests, course of study, and program recommendations. Courses are also transferable among USG institutions.

Whether a student is exploring career pathways in diverse fields or building a foundation for lifelong learning, the USG's Core IMPACTS will prepare students for the challenges and opportunities ahead!

Overview
Students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, focusing on the academic priorities unique to their institution. This section equips students to engage thoughtfully with key challenges and opportunities throughout the academic journey which will prepare students both for personal and professional success.

Orienting Question: How do I measure the world?

Overview
Whether it's through words, numbers, graphics, or symbols, students will gain understanding to apply mathematical and computational knowledge to understand, assess, and communicate quantitative information. These courses will help students enhance skills in information literacy, critical analysis, and problem-solving.

Orienting Question: How do I prepare for my responsibilities as an engaged citizen?

Overview
These courses will deepen students' understanding of the historical development of the United States and Georgia, as well as the foundational principles of their constitutions. Students will strengthen skills in critical thinking, intercultural awareness, and persuasive abilities.

Orienting Question: How do I interpret the human experience through creative, linguistic, and philosophical works?

Overview
Students will engage with literary, philosophical, and artistic works, interpreting their meaning, cultural relevance, and ethical dimensions. These courses will enhance knowledge in ethical reasoning, information literacy, and intercultural understanding.

Orienting Question: How do I write effectively in different contexts?

Overview
These courses help students understand the art of written communication, teaching them how to structure clear ideas and use language that resonates with different audiences. Students will polish their abilities to critically analyze texts, draw informed conclusions, and properly cite original sources. These courses are designed to strengthen skills in critical thinking, information literacy, and persuasive writing.

Orienting Question: How do I ask scientific questions or use data, mathematics, or technology to understand the universe?

Overview
Students will be guided through the use of the scientific method, lab techniques, and computational approaches to interpret data, solve complex problems, and explore the workings of the natural world while providing students opportunities to sharpen abilities in research, problem-solving, and teamwork.

Orienting Question: How do I understand human experiences and connections?

Overview
Explore the intricacies of human behavior and investigate how historical, economic, political, social, and geographical factors develop and influence people. These courses will enhance skills in intercultural understanding, empathy, and persuasive communication.
